\u201cWhat would have, could have become of Africa if Europeans never colonized it? If there was no colonialism, altering of entire civilizations, destruction of their political and social systems, their cultural dignity and self-worth? What social and political systems and cultural and religious heritage would the World witness today, if the western values and ideologies had not wiped away the traditional African ones?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n Those are the questions I wrote on a blank page of a book, on a flight back from a 4-month stay in Ghana, in 2009. Those are the questions I still, 10 years later, wonder about; questions the answers to which, the World will never know. It is not only that we colonised the people, their nature, forests, customs, their worlds. It is that we colonized their minds, ideas and logics. It is not only that we drew maps and borders, named names to territories and people, with little knowledge of, and even less consideration for their culture, belongings and ethnicity. It is that we imposed a foreign incompatible system, broke their own and left them alone \u2013 granting their independence as confusion rather than liberation.<\/p>\n Soon after the independence of Africa\u2019s newly built states, Europe, Russia and the USA started their endless wars of political and economic ideologies. They aggravated rather than aided the ethnical conflicts, wars and massacres \u2013 influencing and conditioning \u2013 sometimes as a political game, other times as a military gain. At the same time, it helped our neo-colonial cause to portray Africa as a poor, corrupt, black continent brewing with diseases, conflicts and famine, in need of our assistance, as this was a prerequisite of keeping our influence and presence. Yet, we portrayed ourselves as benevolent donors, pouring money into the continent, helping to feed the \u201cpoor children of Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n The final stage of neo-colonisation comes in a form of globalization \u2013 ranging from globalized production, exploitation of their natural resources and waste disposal, to policy, technological and scientific experimentation in their<\/em> land. One of the examples of continuation of colonial legacy is the nature conservation approach; fencing the forests for hunting for nobilities back then, and for storing carbon today so that the rich countries will secure their right to pollute.<\/p>\n Yet, while all these are justified in the name of more connectedness and globalised world, the rules of globalisation suddenly do not apply to migration. Europe, US shut their borders to Africans \u2013 among others \u2013 seeking refuge in their colonisers\u2019 homes. With wars, environmental and economic calamities raging in these countries the former colonisers have a chance to correct their past. The least we, as Europeans \u2013 even those without colonisation background \u2013 could do is to open our borders, accept and help innocent people fleeing various conflicts. Yet, we choose to dip our heads in the sand and pretend not to see. Send people back to their \u201csave countries\u201d to die, disrupting families in the name of national interest and sovereignty.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mit\u00e4 Afrikasta olisi voinut tulla, jos sinne ei olisi tullut eurooppalaisia siirtomaavaltiaita? Ent\u00e4 jos emme olisi muokanneet kokonaisia sivilisaatioita mieleisiksemme emmek\u00e4 tuhonneet poliittisia ja sosiaalisia j\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4, kulttuurista omanarvontuntoa, ihmisten itsetuntoa?<\/p>\n Millaisia sosiaalisia ja poliittisia j\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4 ja uskonnollisia perinteit\u00e4 Afrikassa olisi nyt, jos l\u00e4nsimaiset arvot ja ideologiat eiv\u00e4t olisi tuhonneet perinteisi\u00e4 afrikkalaisia arvoja?<\/p>\n T\u00e4llaisia kysymyksi\u00e4 kirjoitin tyhj\u00e4lle kirjan sivulle lent\u00e4ess\u00e4ni takaisin nelj\u00e4n kuukauden Ghanan-matkalta vuonna 2009. Nuo kysymykset ovat yh\u00e4 mieless\u00e4ni kymmenen vuoden j\u00e4lkeen. Ne ovat kysymyksi\u00e4, joihin maailma ei koskaan saa vastausta.<\/p>\n Emme ole kolonisoineet pelk\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n ihmiset, heid\u00e4n luontonsa, mets\u00e4ns\u00e4 ja tapansa, heid\u00e4n maailmansa. Kolonisoimme my\u00f6s heid\u00e4n mielens\u00e4, ajatuksensa ja logiikkansa.<\/p>\n Emme vain piirt\u00e4neet karttoja ja rajoja, antaneet nimi\u00e4 valloittamillemme alueille ja kansoille \u2013 vailla tietoa ja v\u00e4linpit\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6min\u00e4 heid\u00e4n kulttuureistaan ja etnisyyksist\u00e4\u00e4n. Me pakotimme heid\u00e4t vieraaseen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4n, rikoimme heid\u00e4n omansa ja j\u00e4timme heid\u00e4t lopulta itsen\u00e4istym\u00e4\u00e4n yksin ja h\u00e4mmentynein\u00e4. Eik\u00e4 niink\u00e4\u00e4n vapautuneina.<\/p>\n Pian Afrikan valtioiden itsen\u00e4istymisen j\u00e4lkeen Eurooppa, Ven\u00e4j\u00e4 ja Yhdysvallat aloittivat Afrikassa loputtoman taistelun poliittisista ja taloudellisista ideologioista.<\/p>\n T\u00e4m\u00e4 ei parantanut vaan syvensi etnisi\u00e4 konflikteja, sotia ja kansanmurhia. Toisinaan pelattiin poliittista peli\u00e4, joskus tavoiteltiin sotilaallista hy\u00f6ty\u00e4.<\/p>\n Samanaikaisesti se hy\u00f6dytti uus-kolonialistista tarvettamme saada Afrikka n\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n k\u00f6yh\u00e4lt\u00e4, korruptoituneelta ja mustalta mantereelta, jossa taudit, konfliktit ja n\u00e4l\u00e4nh\u00e4t\u00e4 pesiv\u00e4t.<\/p>\n Ennen kaikkea halusimme n\u00e4hd\u00e4 Afrikan olevan apumme tarpeessa, sill\u00e4 se on edellytys oman valta-asemamme ja l\u00e4sn\u00e4olomme oikeutukselle. Itsemme kuvasimme hyv\u00e4ntahtoisina lahjoittajina, jotka kaatavat rahaa Afrikan mantereelle ja ruokkivat Afrikan k\u00f6yhi\u00e4 lapsia.<\/p>\n Viimeinen kolonisaation vaihe on globalisaatio.<\/p>\n Siihen kuuluu globaali tuotanto, Afrikan resurssien riisto ja meid\u00e4n j\u00e4tteidemme k\u00e4sittely, mutta my\u00f6s poliittiset, teknologiset ja tieteelliset kokeilut Afrikan mantereella.<\/p>\n Yksi esimerkki kolonialismin perinn\u00f6st\u00e4 on luonnonsuojelu. Aluksi mets\u00e4t aidattiin jalosukuisten mets\u00e4stysalueiksi, nyt vaikkapa hiilensidontaan, jotta rikkaat maat voivat varmistaa p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6oikeutensa.<\/p>\n Vaikka t\u00e4t\u00e4 kaikkea perustellaan maailman yhdentymisell\u00e4 ja globalisaatiolla, globalisaation s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6t eiv\u00e4t kuitenkaan salli muuttoliikett\u00e4.<\/p>\n Eurooppa ja USA sulkivat rajansa afrikkalaisilta, jotka etsiv\u00e4t turvapaikkaa siirtomaais\u00e4nnilt\u00e4\u00e4n. Antamalla turvapaikka Afrikassa riehuvien sotien ja eko- ja talouskatastrofien uhreille entisill\u00e4 siirtomaavaltiailla olisi mahdollisuus korjata menneisyyden virheens\u00e4.<\/p>\n V\u00e4hint\u00e4, mit\u00e4 me eurooppalaisina voisimme tehd\u00e4 \u2013 vaikka juuri meill\u00e4 itsell\u00e4mme ei olisikaan siirtomaavaltiaan historiaa \u2013, olisi avata rajamme, hyv\u00e4ksy\u00e4 ja auttaa viattomia, erilaisia konflikteja pakenevia ihmisi\u00e4. Me kuitenkin kaivamme p\u00e4\u00e4mme hiekkaan ja teeskentelemme sokeaa. L\u00e4het\u00e4mme ihmiset takaisin “turvallisiin maihin” kuolemaan, ja hajotamme perheit\u00e4 kansallisen edun ja suvereniteetin nimiss\u00e4.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
