W<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">e had many interesting and analytically rich sessions that provoked more discussion than what there was time for. The conference atmosphere was spiced with a tangible sense of community-building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the times of crises we live in, a stronger and critical development research community is indeed needed. The FSDR Chair and Conference Co-Chair, <strong>Bonn Juego<\/strong>, opened the conference with a welcome speech, touching on the annual gathering&#8217;s theme and proposing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kehitystutkimus.fi\/?p=1965\">\u201cDevelopment Studies as a Prefigurative Discipline of Conscience in the Time of Polycrisis\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bonn Juego, &quot;Development Studies as a Prefigurative Discipline of Conscience&quot; - Opening #DevDays2024\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y1_05QzFzt4?start=12&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Professor <strong>Barry K. Gills<\/strong> delivered a nostalgic and, as always, critical keynote, reflecting on his five decades of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JiegkhnEjN8?si=4MdohhicGRS4d0Gu\">\u201clife in Development\u201d<\/a>. Professor <strong>Franklin Obeng-Odoom<\/strong> provided a thought-provoking introduction to the evolution of Gills&#8217; work and ideas. This keynote was followed by a roundtable discussion involving Gills&#8217; colleagues, co-authors, and students from throughout his career: <strong>Don Marshall<\/strong>, <strong>Jamie Morgan<\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Gray<\/strong>, <strong>Walden Bello<\/strong>, <strong>S.A. Hamed Hosseini<\/strong>, <strong>Anja Nygren<\/strong>, and <strong>Antti Tarvainen<\/strong>. As highlighted in the discussion and tributes during the roundtable, Gills is admired for the strong moral foundation of his academic work, his commitment to global justice and solidarity with the Global South, and his humility and courage to \u201cgo against the grain\u201d, as Professor Marshall aptly put it.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The reminiscent and emotional atmosphere was palpable as the invited speakers and audience celebrated Gills\u2019 career, achievements and the support he has given to students and colleagues since the 1980s, including and the past decade as professor in Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Collectively, we warmly thank Professor Barry Gills and wish him all the best as he is soon to step into retirement or, as suggested during the roundtable and the jovial evening reception at the City of Helsinki, into an \u201cindefinite research leave\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JiegkhnEjN8\">The recording of Gills&#8217; keynote lecture, as well as the roundtable in his honour, is available at FSDR&#8217;s YouTube channel.<\/a><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Keynote Lecture and Roundtable in Honour of Barry K. Against the common public narrative, the Global North is responsible for nearly 80 per cent of global cumulative carbon emissions from 1850 to 2011. She further posited that if inequality is reduced, poverty eradication is indeed compatible with climate change mitigation, given the richest countries and individuals cause the most carbon emissions globally. In his keynote lecture, Filho presented a comprehensive overview of the crises that the neoliberal system has contributed to, including a critique of financialisation. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The keynote session was commented by Professor <strong>Markus Kr\u00f6ger<\/strong> and followed by a range of questions and discussion from the audience.<\/span><\/div>\n<div
