At the time, my impression was that the community was largely oriented toward the biological sciences and business school perspectives. Hence, in a meeting, I posed a direct question, &#8220;What role is there for the social sciences?&#8221; I also recall a multidisciplinary dialogue where a colleague remarked that social scientists seem preoccupied with defining &#8220;problems,&#8221; while natural scientists are trained to find &#8220;solutions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">I believe that our planet&#8217;s complex problems demand comprehensive solutions. Thus, we need an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach. To be truly relevant and effective, JYU.Wisdom should guard against the &#8220;cult of specialism.&#8221; Just as nature thrives on biodiversity, our intellectual community must thrive on synergy in diversity.<br \/>\n<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Q: You\u2019ve recently proposed the concept of \u201cjust sustainability\u201d for the upcoming Wisdom Days 2026. How does this differ from mainstream sustainability?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Bonn:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Mainstream sustainability is often trapped within the very ideologies that created our ecological crises: capitalism, colonialism, nationalism, and individualism. It tends to focus on growth obsession, techno-fixes, market-oriented policies, and an individualistic ethos that allow business-as-usual to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In contrast, \u201cjust sustainability\u201d is both an analytical framework and a call to action. It problematizes how our current mode of production profits from the accumulation of waste\u2014 not merely material waste, but primarily through \u201cwasted living\u201d and \u201cwasted lives.\u201d The conventional understanding of capitalism is that capitalists earn money by expropriating surplus through the exploitation of workers\u2019 productivity; in reality, however, capitalism extracts tremendous profits by wasting nature and human lives, converting \u201cvaluable beings\u201d into \u201cwasteful things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In advancing an agenda toward planetary well-being, we must treat insularity as a problem alongside Eurocentrism and Americentrism. We need a global and historical perspective founded on the principle of justice. Among other strategies, this entails diversifying our economies, decolonizing our minds and institutions, and deglobalizing exploitative supply chains.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Q: How does your work connect to the idea of \u201cplanetary well-being\u201d?<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Bonn:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Planetary well-being captures the necessary synthesis and synergy of socio-ecological life. My work provides a critical, political-economic grounding for it. We cannot achieve planetary well-being while our global economy\u2014and the politico-cultural institutions embedded in it\u2014is organized around capital accumulation that requires economic inequality, ecological degradation, and social exploitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The well-being of a forest, a river, a community, and the climate are interconnected. A just sustainability framework asks: who has the power to define \u201cwell-being,\u201d and how are resources produced, valued, and allocated? It insists that well-being must be defined democratically and pluriversally, not by the self-serving agendas of abusive states and corporations invested in the status quo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Q: You are a vocal critic of the \u201cAmerica First\u201d doctrine and imperialist wars. How does this connect to our planetary survival?<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Bonn:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> We are living in a moment of extreme danger. The rise and popularity of narcissistic megalomaniacs with fascist tendencies\u2014most notably Donald Trump, Big Tech oligarchs, and their like-minded allies\u2014is accelerating the doomsday clock. The \u201cAmerica First\u201d policy is not a retreat from neoliberal globalization; it is a violent response to hyper-competition in contemporary global capitalism, which even the USA can no longer control.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Imperialist wars are the architecture that entrenches the military-industrial-financial-oil complex and the racial-gender-class supremacy of the white male capitalist class. These wars of conquest and aggression are an existential threat to humanity and nature. At the same time, we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by the inter-elite squabbles between hypocritical liberal internationalists and fascist nationalists. Both are forms of elite capture that facilitate a structural genocide against the planet\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Q: You have been noted for your advocacy for \u201cpeace.\u201d How does your critique of imperialism link to resource conflicts? And what does it mean to be a Wisdomer during this time of intense geopolitics?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Bonn:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> We cannot separate ecological destruction from the machinery of war. Imperialism is often a project and process of imposing power and securing resources at the cost of human lives and local ecosystems. In a public forum, I was quoted emphasizing: \u201cDivest from wars and invest in life.\u201d War is the ultimate \u201cwaster\u201d of nature and humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">When we divest from life-shortening priorities\u2014from the warmongering of security apparatuses to the economic policies of austerity\u2014we free up the \u201csocial surplus\u201d to invest in the foundations of planetary well-being: the commons, health, education, collective care, ecological restoration, mutual aid, and human flourishing. Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice and the dismantling of the coercive securitization and militarization that primarily protect the vested interests of extractivist elites. Peace is an essential precondition for the public good and for all the aspirations we hold for our planet, our environment, and our communities. <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">To be a \u201cWisdomer\u201d at this specific juncture in world history is to recognize that the \u201cgreenpeace\u201d advocacy framework\u2014which combines anti-war activism with environmental protection\u2014is far from old-fashioned. In the face of imperialism, socio-cultural fascism, political authoritarianism, and ecological extractivism, we should relive the slogan \u201cResist to exist.\u201d But in an era of deepening climate collapse and permanent war, perhaps resistance is no longer enough; we must rebel against extinction.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/>\n&#8212; <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jyu.fi\/en\/file\/bonn-juego-meet-a-wisdomer\">Bonn Juego<\/a> is a political economist and Senior Lecturer in International Development Studies at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, where he is a core teaching staff for DEICO\u2014the Master\u2019s Programme in Development, Education and International Cooperation. He is currently serving his third term as the Chair of the Finnish Society for Development Research.
