In Memoriam: Lauri Siitonen

Dr. Lauri Siitonen, researcher and teacher of international development cooperation, passed away after a bout of illness on 22 March 2026 in Helsinki at the age of 72. He was born in Turku on 14 February 1954. He went to school in Eura. He studied international politics at the University of Turku and received his Master’s degree in 1982 and Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2005.
Already at university, he was drawn by the puzzle of international development cooperation, which later gave him opportunities to work both as a researcher and teacher on the theme. Lauri built his professional career through various fixed-term assignments at different universities, mostly in Helsinki, Jyväskylä, and Luxembourg. Whatever role he had in these assignments, he always fulfilled his Humboldtian university ideal—he taught what he researched, and he researched what he taught, and enjoyed both of them.
Lauri took part in a number of research projects that focused on the issue of international development cooperation. He did not consider international development cooperation merely as the transfer of resources from the North to the South. As a political scientist, his interest was in the dynamics of the relationship between the participating states of international development cooperation. As he maintained, to understand the dynamics of official development cooperation, one needs to focus on the prevailing paradigm of interstate relationship, since one might arrive at different conclusions on international development cooperation depending on the paradigm. Following a constructivist approach to international politics, he considered that, in addition to their national interest, for the donor community—particularly for small donors—international development cooperation plays a role in the formulation and solidification of their identity in the international community.
Lauri was an active member of the Finnish research community. He served as the Executive Director of the Consortium for Comparative Research on Regional Integration and Social Cohesion (RISC) from 2016 to 2019. He was a member of the doctoral training working group of the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID). He was an active member of the Finnish Society for Development Research (FSDR). He served as its Chairperson from 2009 to 2010. He was a member of the executive committee of the European Association of Development Research Institutes (EADI) from 2008 to 2011.
Lauri is survived by his wife, Marja, and two children, Anni and Antti, and two grandchildren, Eino and Oiva. Lauri was kind, positive, and always ready to cooperate. Thanks to his language skills, he could easily build research networks both in the South and in the North. The European research community, however, was his home ground. In the South, he had close research cooperation with researchers from Nepal and Tanzania. Lately, Lauri has had general health problems. However, these health issues could hardly influence his nature, neither as a person nor as a researcher. Everywhere he will be remembered as a civilised, kind and generous person with a fine sense of gentle humour.
